His automail has nothing to do with his transmutations “without a circle” as you so put it. He is doing transmutations with a circle. They explain that his arms for the circle, and it’s much more detailed later in the series.

The real reason Ed can use Alchemy without a circle is when He and his brother tried to revive their mother he was brought to “the Gate” and any alchemist who sees “the Gate” can then use Alchemy without a circle for they gained exponential knowledge of alchemy from the being beyond “the Gate”
